ACTIVITIES &
RECREATION
Snorkeling
and Diving -
The outstanding
snorkeling and
diving spots are
Similan Island
national Marine
Park, Surin
Island National
Marine Park, and
other islands
scattering
around in Phang
Nga Bay like Yao
Island, Khai
Island, Hong
Isalnd and Panak
Island.
Snorkeling can
obviously be
enjoyed by the
whole family,
young and old.
Observe at close
quarters a huge
array of reef
fish such as
damsels,
triggerfish,
parrotfish,
surgeonfish,
banner fish, and
lionfish.
Equipment and a
local guide will
be provided on
all arranged
trips. The
nearest site is
Khao Na Yak
Reef, just off
the coast of
KhaoLak. There
are a colourful
variation of
fish here, and
interesting
coral gardens.
Trips by
long-tail boat
are readily
available.
The Similan
Islands are
probably one of
the most popular
destinations.
They are
renowned the
world over for
their natural
beauty and
incredible
underwater
sightseeing at
depths from two
to thirty five
meters.
The two largest
islands are Ko
Surin Nua (north
island) and Ko
Surin Tai (south
island) and at
one point these
two islands lie
just across a
small bay from
each other. Some
of the best
diving to be had
is in the
channel between
these two
islands. Ko Chi,
Ko Pachumba and
Ko Torinla are
the other
islands. There
is also the
small rock
outpost of Hin
Rap ( 2km north
of Surin Nua)
and a series of
granite boulders
projecting above
the surface at
Hin Kong ( 2km
east of the
southern half of
Surin Tai).
Trekking &
elephant riding:
As most part of
Pnag Nga is
forested area,
and with many
national parks
established in
the province,
there several
places for
trekking. It is
a good
experience to
discover its
fertility of
floras and
faunas as well
as to study
about birds and
wild animals.
Trekking can be
done by riding
on the elephant
back or hiking
along the nature
trail arranged
in each national
park. The
interested
nature trails
include Khao
Lak-Laem Ru
National Park of
which the trail
offers an
opportunity to
see various
species of birds
and wild
animals. Another
place where you
can trek and
ride on the
elephant back is
at Tone Pariwatt
Wildlife
Sanctuary which
provides a trail
trough a dense
jungle dotted
with beautiful
waterfall and
abundant with
rare species of
plants and wild
animals. In Thai
Muang National
Park, you can
walk along the
nature trail
teemed with
verdant jungle
spotted by
pleasant
waterfalls as
well.
Artificial
Flowers are
made by village
women from
rubber tree
leaves. These
are ingeniously
conceived and
handmade. They
can be purchased
from the
Agricultural
Dept. Office in
Phang-Nga Town,
and also from
the Farm Women's
Group in various
districts. Call
the Agricultural
Dept. Office at
(076) 412019
between 9.00
a.m. and 4.00
p.m. for further
information.
Agricultural
Products and
Seafood
Phang-nga is
famous for its
shrimp paste,
called kapi,
which comes in
several styles,
e.g. Kapi Koh
Yao and Kapi Ko
Panyee. Also
popular is gung
siab, which is
dried shrimp
eaten with a
kapi based spicy
condiment called
nam prik. These
items can be
found in local
stores and
markets
everywhere.
The Turtle
Releasing
Festival -
Phang-nga
Province has an
annual 7-day
Turtle Releasing
Festival in
March. Turtles
raised by the
Fisheries
Department are
released by
festival
participants
into the sea at
Thai Muang
Beach.
Leatherback and
Olive Ridley are
the two main
species of
turtle which
frequent the
Park. They come
ashore to lay
their eggs on
moonlit nights
between November
and April, at
which time the
beach is
patrolled by
Park rangers.
For conservation
and protection
purposes, most
of the eggs are
removed by staff
to a nursery.
Incubation takes
60 days, after
which time the
youngsters are
released
naturally back
into the Andaman
Sea. The
particular
releasing in
March is
designed to
heighten
people's
awareness of the
declining
numbers of
nesting females
and promote
conservation
efforts.
